When my boyfriend (now husband!) and I spent 9 months in Florianópolis, we often visited Praia do Rosa to surf and explore.
Located just 90km south, a 1.5 hour drive, from Florianópolis (also known as Floripa), it was the perfect weekend getaway with the cutest restaurants, homestays by the beach, and best beach for surf of all levels.

Where is Praia do Rosa?
Praia do Rosa is a small beach town located in Imbituba on the southern coast of Brazil, in the state of Santa Catarina.
It faces the Atlantic Ocean on one side and green, tropical, lush mountains on the other, and is one of the most beautiful beaches in southern Brazil.

- Currency is Brazilian Real (BRL)
- Official Language is Portuguese, but most people will speak very basic English
- Praia do Rosa is less than 2km long and forms part of the “Rota da Baleia Franca” which is the Southern Right Whale Route
- There are two lagoons in the middle: Lagoa do Meio and Lagoa do Canto
- Whale watching, surfing, and partying are very popular activities here!
- Praia do Rosa is surrounded by a protected nature reserve
How do you get to Praia do Rosa?
The closest airport is Florianópolis International Airport – Hercílio Luz (FLN), which is around a 1.5 hour drive away.
Flights operate daily from Sao Paulo, Rio, and other major cities.
From Florianópolis, you can then choose to:
- Rent a car and drive to Praia do Rosa (recommended to explore at your own pace)
- Take a bus from Floripa to nearby towns like Garopaba and Imbituba, and then transfer to Praia do Rosa
If you’re planning to surf, I definitely recommend renting a car so you can drive to the different waves and take boards with you!
Best Time to Visit Praia do Rosa Brazil
The best time to visit Praia do Rosa depends on what you’re looking for:
- Surf Season (April to November): This period offers the best waves for surfing, with consistent swells. However, note that the beach is closed to “tainha season” for a few months in the winter time so you won’t be able to get in the water.
- Whale Watching (July to November): During these months, you can spot Southern Right Whales migrating along the coast.
- Summer (December to March): If you’re after warmer weather, beach parties and nightlife, visit during Brazil’s summer. It will be more crowded and more expensive, but it’s so much fun!
Praia do Rosa Surf
Praia do Rosa is considered one of Brazil’s top surf destinations, and the beach has consistent waves for all levels.
The main beach is divided into Rosa Norte (North Rosa) and Rosa Sul (South Rosa), with Rosa Norte being the go-to spot for experienced surfers for faster, more powerful waves.
For beginners, Rosa Sul is calmer and better suited for surf lessons. There are several surf schools and board rentals available in town.
Best Places To Stay
Fazenda do Rosa: My husband and I usually stay at Fazenda do Rosa (photos below). It is a comfortable, scenic, affordable option walking distance to the beach with the best sunrise and surf check views from your room! Breakfast is included.
Solar Mirador Exclusive Resort & Spa: The Solar Mirador is a more luxurious option with stunning views and more privacy if you are traveling with a loved one. They offer top-tier service and amenities.
Shiva Boutique Hotel: This is another affordable option close to the beach with big, comfortable rooms and a buffet breakfast.
Best Things To Do
Surfing: I usually visit Praia do Rosa mainly to surf. It’s a must-do activity, the lineup is extremely friendly, and as a surfing hotspot, it’s a must-do activity!
Windsurfing and Kitesurfing: If it’s too windy to surf, windsurfing and kitesurfing are also popular activities around here as well.
Whale Watching: From July to November, you can see Southern Right Whales from the beach or on a guided boat tour.
Hiking: Several trails around Praia do Rosa offer stunning views of the coastline, including the popular trail to Praia Vermelha.
Relax and Enjoy Beach Clubs: Spend a relaxing day at one of the beach clubs, like Quintal Butiá or Maré Alta, for great food and drinks right by the ocean.
Lagoon Swimming: Praia do Rosa is home to beautiful lagoons that are perfect for swimming or paddleboarding. Sometimes you’ll see seals!
Things to Know Before Visiting Praia do Rosa Brazil
Tainha Season: Runs from May to July, where the fishermen block off the beach to fish for mullet. You will not be able to surf or go in the water so plan accordingly!
Pack for All Weather: Weather in Praia do Rosa can be unpredictable and especially chilly at night. Bring layers for cooler evenings and possible rain showers, even during the summer time.
Book Ahead in Summer: Praia do Rosa is a popular destination during Brazil’s summer months, so if you’re visiting during peak season, be sure to book your accommodation in advance because it gets busy.
Don’t Miss the Sunset: Praia do Rosa is famous for its breathtaking sunsets. Head to one of the beachside bars or take a stroll along the shore to catch this stunning daily spectacle.
