Everyone Experiences ‘Funks’
Welcome back to the Wanderlover podcast. I am recording this episode from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After another almost 24 hour travel day from Europe, we have finally made it back and I am just so happy to be back in the sunshine right on the beach. Today we are talking about something that every single entrepreneur goes through at.
Some point, and that is being in a funk. So those days or weeks when you’re just feeling so unmotivated, uninspired, and maybe even questioning your path if you’ve ever been there or if you’re going through it right now, first of all, just know that you are. Definitely not alone. I’ve been there so many times and it really does not mean that you are failing.
It honestly just means you are human and you are about to enter into a bigger and better chapter. The good news is there are tried and tested ways to move through it, and that’s exactly what we are going to cover today. You’re going to get out of this funk as a better and stronger, more resilient entrepreneur.
So let’s get straight to it. Here are three powerful ways to get out of a business bunk and back into momentum.
Breaking A Low Energy Cycle
When you are stuck, your energy is low. The fastest way to break that cycle is to physically change your state. And so the first way is we want to shift your state immediately. Recognize that your external environment and the thoughts that are going through your head right now have led you to be in the state.
So if you change your external environment or if you change your thoughts, you shift your state and you change your mood. Step away from your desk and go move your body, whether that’s going for a workout, a walk, or just getting some sunshine going out for a surf. (Check out my top 5 digital nomad destinations for surfers here!) We want to do something that breaks the cycle.
You can also think about using music, meditation, or breath work to reset your energy. Just do something that you don’t normally do in your day-to-day routine. One of my personal favorite ways to shift my state immediately is to change my environment. So going to work from a new cafe, joining a new coworking space, or just being somewhere that inspires me.
And for me personally, that’s being in the water. It really helps me see things from a new perspective instead of just. Sulking or continuing with the low energy. This is especially helpful if it was one business event or one external factor that caused you to enter this funk in the first place. So if you change your internal and external environment, you are guaranteed to snap out of it faster.
Reconnect With Your vision
On the other hand, and the second way to get out of a business funk, if you are reflecting and you think that you are in this because you feel unaligned with what you are doing in your business, it may be time to reconnect with your vision. If you find yourself getting caught up in day-to-day task and you almost lose sight of the bigger picture of why you are in business.
In the first place, changing your environment will help, but ultimately you need to reconnect with your bigger vision and take time to do so. Ask yourself, do you need a break? Do you need time off? Or are you procrastinating for fear of the next level? Are you procrastinating because there are action items that you know will get used?
Seen will open up possibilities for nos. Set you up for potential failure. Is there something that is holding you back? If you said yes to either of these, you really need to revisit your why. Why you started your business in the first place. Journal about where you want to be in your lifetime in three years, in one year, in three months, and then visualize what your next level self is doing daily.
What is the next chapter you are calling in?
Why this works
Why this works is because inspiration comes back when you zoom out and remember the bigger mission behind the small tasks. Sometimes you get so caught up in posting the Instagram reel, in sending out the email newsletter and taking discovery calls that you forget each of these seemingly small tasks, they play such an important part to getting you where you want to be.
Setting time aside for yourself to reconnect with your vision is also a permission slip that you are able to take time off and focus on the bigger picture. Your business isn’t going anywhere. Your business isn’t going to fail overnight if you take some time off for yourself. In my previous podcast episodes, I’ve mentioned how some of us, we just work in waves.
We have a few months of intense bursts of energy and bursts of motivation and productivity, and then other times we need to take a step back. We need to realign and we need to refuel. That is completely okay. It is unsustainable for you to go at 110%. All the time. So make sure you are focusing on what is truly important and that will move you forward.
Trust yourself
It’s also really important to just trust the fact that your inspiration and your productivity will come back after so many iterations of going through various business funks for whatever reason. Seeing my clients go through the same, I know that it’s just a phase. I know that it’s not forever. Although the timelines will be different each time, depending on why you are in one in the first place, trust that it’s going to pass and trust that you are going to be a more resilient entrepreneur coming out of it on the other side.
Take One Aligned Action NOW
The last way to get out of a business funk is to simply take one aligned action right now. You are not trying to fix an entire problem with this one action, but the mindset is you’re just trying to be 1% better than you were yesterday, 1% better than the person you were 10 minutes ago. Take one small aligned action that will get you one step closer and move the needle.
Clarity comes from action, not overthinking. And I tend to attract a community of over thinkers, but instead of trying to fix everything. Just do one meaningful step. Often the thing that has been on your to-do list for the longest time, I find myself sometimes moving to do items week after week after week.
And that is the one thing that’s bringing me into this deeper and deeper funk because I just see it recurring and I’m not doing anything about it. So if you have. Something that’s keeping you, that’s probably going to be the thing you’ll want to tackle first. And once that is in the works, I have a feeling that everything else will fall into place as well.
Sometimes when we build something that becomes this giant monster in our head, or this giant thing we don’t know how to tackle, just simply directing attention to it. We’ll help it resolve on its own. Look back on your lifetime, your three year, your one year and three month goals, and ask yourself if the one action that you are procrastinating on is going to take you one step closer to where you want to be.
If it is a yes, you’ll want to tackle that right now. Either send that email you’ve been avoiding, publish a piece of content that you’ve been procrastinating on. (Need procrastination tips? Check out my episode with anti-procrastination coach Natalia Albinski). Or maybe reach out to a potential client or a collaborator. Momentum builds from action and even a small win reignites, that confidence and that flow, that is ultimately what we rely on as entrepreneurs to have that creative spark within us, and then the systems in place to carry us through these dips when we are feeling low.
Everything Is In Your Control
But ultimately, just know that everything is within your control and you can control your environment, your thoughts, and thus affect your results. The quick mantra I have for you is I don’t need to do it all. I just need to take the next best step. So ask yourself, what is the next best step that you can take right now?
Identify it. Execute it and recognize that messy and perfect action is exactly what you need to invite the next level. You the motivated, inspired entrepreneur in right now, you have the power to control what you do, and you have the power to change your reality. If this episode resonated with you, I would love if you could message me at The Wanderlover and let me know what the next step you are taking today is. Or if you could please take a moment to rate us on Spotify or leave a review on Apple Podcasts so we can get this message out to those who need to hear it the most.
I will see you guys in the next episode. Have an amazing week, my loves.
