15 work-from-home (Remote) job ideas

Do you want the ability to work when you want, wherever you want? To work on your own schedule and not have to rush into the office each morning? The beaches of Florianopolis, or the coworking spots in Bali could be your new office.

Work-from-home jobs can take many forms. They could be remote weekend jobs,  offering freelance services, working for a company remotely, or my personal favourite, starting an online business.

They are a great way to achieve the perfect work-life balance and do the things you actually enjoy. From blogging to teaching languages, there are so many jobs you can do from anywhere in the world.

In this guide, I’ve rounded up some of the most popular work-from-home jobs, with everything you need to get started.

What are the benefits of working from home?

From working with your baby to working in between surfs, remote jobs bring a lot perks that help improve your work life balance!

For me, the best part of working from home is the ability to balance work and fun. You’ll no longer have to endure the daily commute or deal with office politics. On top of that, you’ll have the flexibility to work around your lifestyle. For me this is ability to schedule my calls and work hours around travel and surfing.

In today’s world, it’s so easy to burn yourself out. By working from home, you can slow down the pace and make room for the things you love.

How much can you earn working from home?

How long is a piece of string? The amount you make is entirely dependent on what you do and how much of it you do. From an extra thousand per month to 6 figures and beyond. There is no limit to what you can make online.

The beauty of being an entrepreneur is that you can set your rates and you can set the hours you work yourself. You can work more hours, onboard more clients, or you might just be happy with the odd extra few bucks here and there.

When it comes to how much you earn, it’s helpful to first ask yourself how much you want to earn or need to earn to live the lifestyle you want. Do some research and set the rates that you are comfortable with. Rates that give you the freedom to do the things that you enjoy the most.

How do I get a work-from-home job?

If you are self-employed there are several different ways to find work. Depending on your line of work, platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and YunoJuno are all great ways to secure freelance work. You’ll find everything from Copywriting to Social Media Marketing jobs. The great thing about these platforms is that many projects can turn into long-term relationships. Applying for jobs on platforms takes a lot of time so I’d recommend focussing on just one or two platforms tailored to your skills and expertise.

Another great way to find work-from-home jobs is by advertising your services. Build a website, use social media, and produce high-quality content to generate leads.

Things to avoid

While there are many ways to make money online, be sure to look out for scam work-from-home advertisements. You know the ones. They usually pop up on your social media feed and claim that you can make thousands of dollars by selling makeup. My advice? Avoid these schemes at all costs! While they may look promising, these jobs WILL NOT put you on the path to financial freedom.

Best work-from-home jobs

Now that you know what to look out for, here are the best work-from-home jobs for online entrepreneurs.

Blogging

Blogging is one of my absolute favourite ways to make money online. With so many opportunities to monetize, 2024 is a great time to start blogging

From affiliate marketing to sponsored content to ad revenue, blogging is brimming with potential. A good blog about something you’re passionate about will build your brand, grow your audience, and generate more sales. It’s also a great choice for Digital Nomads who like to work and travel.

The amount you earn from blogging entirely depends on how much work you put in. To give you an idea, a successful blog can make anything from $5,000+ a month.

Affiliate marketing

Closely linked to blogging, affiliate marketing enables you to earn commission by promoting the products and services of other brands and products. Depending on your niche, this could be easier than you think, as you don’t necessarily need a lot of readers, you just need an engaged audience that trusts your recommendations.

There’s also a huge demand for affiliate marketers. So, if you’ve got experience or interest in sales strategy and promotional advertising, this could be a great option.

Freelance writing

Are you good with words? Do you have a good eye for detail? See yourself as a creative thinker?

If the answer to most of these questions is yes, then there are tons of opportunities for freelance writers. Whether you like writing blogs, landing pages, marketing emails, YouTube scripts, or something else entirely, marketing agencies are crying out for copywriters. If this sounds like you, platforms like Upwork are a great way to build your portfolio.

When it comes to rates, some companies like to pay per word, while others pay per hour or project. Choose the option that you prefer and set your rates accordingly. As a rough guide, an intermediate writer can earn between $0.10-$1.00 per word.

Create an online course

If you’ve read my blog on ways to make extra money online, then you’ll know that online courses are the key to passive income. That’s money as you sleep! If you have insights and knowledge to share, an online course is a great way to boost your income. It may take a bit of work beforehand but once it’s complete you can sit back and let the $$$ roll in. Anything from a few thousand dollars a month is pretty common for a well-designed course.

Teach a language

If you speak another language, then your journey into work-from-home life has just become a whole lot easier. If you enjoy helping people, then you’ll love life as an online language teacher. The best part is that you don’t need to be bilingual – English is enough! Get started by getting a TEFL qualification. With a growing demand for online English teachers, you can expect to earn anything from $14 to $40 per hour.

Write an ebook

Writing an ebook is something I regularly recommend to my clients because it is another fantastic way to generate passive income. They can also be used to grow your audience and build your email list. Before publishing anything, make sure you choose a topic that you’re passionate about and become an expert in the field.

Transcribing audio

With an estimated 3.2 million podcasts in 2023 and 464 million podcast listeners, it should come as no surprise that transcribers are in demand.

This role usually involves converting recorded material into high-quality written content. For example, an increasingly common role is transcribing podcasts into blogs.

But it doesn’t stop there! Transcribers can be used for virtual meetings, online workshops, and more. The average hourly rate is anything between $20-$35.

Become a virtual assistant (VA)

If you’ve got PA experience, you’ll no longer have to sit in an office to use them. Hooray!

Just like a PA, a VA undertakes administrative tasks such as diary management, data entry, event management, and note-taking. While there may be regular video calls and deadlines, the hours are usually flexible making it a great side hustle while you build your brand. Starting rates vary depending on your skills.

Social media manager

Do you have a knack for social media? Know your stories from your reels? TikTok from Insta?

While there’s a lot more to it than that, social media marketing is in-demand and it’s a profitable choice for forward-thinking individuals.

As a social media manager, you’ll need to create and schedule content and stay on top of the latest data, trends, and insights. It helps to complete a social media marketing course or qualification. Hourly rates range from $20 to $50 per hour.

Open an online store

With 24% of all retail purchases expected to take place online by 2026, now is a great time to get into e-commerce! If you want to open an online store, choose products that align with your brand. Maybe you’re passionate about cooking, yoga, or travel. Whatever it is, find products to fit your niche.

It’s important to note that running an online store may restrict your location freedom because you’ll need a physical space to store your products. Having said that, online stores offer flexible hours and substantial financial growth.

Proofreading

Just like writing, proofreaders need an eye for detail and a strong command of the English language. If you know the English language like the back of your hand and you’re not afraid to correct someone, then this job is for you.

Proofreaders work on anything from organisational documents to blogs and articles.

Starting rates average around $15 per hour, making it a great choice for some extra cash on the side.

Coding

If you can code, then you could be inundated with work-from-home opportunities. Agencies and business owners are commonly in need of people with coding skills.

Freelance and contractor roles start at $40 per hour and can reach up to $150 per hour.

Become an online tutor

Are you a teacher looking for a change of direction? Perhaps you’re an expert in your field who just wants to help others.

If you have the skills and knowledge to back you up, online tutoring can be fun and highly rewarding. Rather than sitting in the classroom, you’ll get to work from the comfort of your own home. If that’s not enough, you’ll also help hundreds of people from around the world realise their dreams.

Editor

Many companies look for freelance editors to finalise and publish their online content. From blogs to marketing emails, you’ll oversee the work of copywriters and ensure it’s ready to go.

To succeed as an online editor, you’ll need to be familiar with different writing styles and understand the target audience. You’ll also need a critical eye and exceptional grammatical knowledge. The average hourly rate for an online editor is $31.60.

Web developer

Trained in coding, web developers create websites and user-friendly apps. To become a successful web developer, you’ll need a combination of technical and creative skills.

It also helps to have an accredited certification or a relevant degree. An experienced web developer can make anything from $250 to $1000 per day. Project work starts at $1000 and can exceed $100,000.

While this list represents some of the most common work-from-home jobs, it’s by no means exhaustive, but I hope it helps get you thinking about different ways you can work from home.

If you’ve got a particular skill set or passion, then you can find a way to work from home or completely remotely.

What I love most about work-from-home jobs is that they give you the freedom to work when you want, earn what you want, and do what you want. If you’re tired of your corporate job, it’s time to make a change. Work-from-home jobs are a great way to transition into a more balanced lifestyle. With the ability to travel around the world, meet inspiring people, and choose your own work, you certainly won’t regret it.
