If you think you need to become a travel influencer to get paid to travel, I need to stop you right there. Because that is one of the biggest misconceptions I see, and it is the exact belief that keeps people stuck in jobs they don’t love, waiting for a following they haven’t built yet, thinking the travel lifestyle is for someone else.

It’s not. And today I’m going to show you every real path to making it work.

Hi! I’m Danielle

If you’re new here, hi, I’m Danielle, founder of The Wanderlover. I’ve been traveling full-time for years, I’ve visited 65 countries, and I built a six-figure online business along the way.

I help creators, coaches, and aspiring digital nomads build income online so they can travel the world on their own terms. Subscribe if that’s the life you’re building because I post every single week.

The Biggest Misconception About Getting Paid to Travel

Before we get into strategies, I want to address something important because without this context, parts of this video might feel like they’re not for you, when they actually are.

Most people hear “get paid to travel” and immediately picture travel blogger, travel influencer, free hotel stays, and brand deals. And yes, that is one path. But it is not the only one.

I’ve worked with so many clients helping them turn their knowledge and content into online income, and the truth is you do not need to be in the travel niche to travel full-time. You don’t need a travel Instagram or a travel YouTube. You don’t need to make content about travel at all.

What you need is income that is not tied to a physical location. That’s the whole equation.

When I first started, the model was much more narrow. You needed an audience, you pitched hotels and tourism boards, and eventually if your numbers were strong enough, the brand deals came. That still works, but it requires time and a lot of showing up before the income follows.

What’s changed is that people are now using their zone of genius to fund this lifestyle. Their existing skills. What they were already good at before they ever thought about building an audience. And that opens this up to so many more people.

So today I’m covering two tracks. Track one is getting paid within the travel industry. Brand deals, yes, but also angles most people overlook. Track two is building online income that has nothing to do with travel content, so you can travel full-time while doing work you actually love.

How to Get Paid Within the Travel Industry

Brand Deals and Press Trips

This is the path most people know. Hotels, tourism boards, airlines, and travel gear brands pay creators to feature their products and destinations.

When I started, this required a much larger following. Today the bar has come down, especially if your engagement is strong, your content is high quality, and you’re clear on your niche within travel.

And that last part is important. The more specific you are, the more valuable you are. A luxury travel creator is more valuable to a five-star resort than a general travel creator. A surf travel creator is the obvious first call for a surf resort. Specificity is what gets you in the door faster and keeps you there.

This is one of the things I go deep on inside The Travel Influencer Handbook. How to position yourself so brands come to you, how to pitch when they don’t, and what your media kit needs to actually convert a cold outreach into a paid campaign.

UGC for Travel Brands

This is what I’d recommend if you’re starting now with a smaller audience. Hotels, booking platforms, luggage companies, and travel gear brands all need content for their own pages, ads, and websites.

With UGC, you don’t post it on your page. They use it on theirs. Your follower count is completely irrelevant.

What matters is whether you can create content that converts. If you can make a hotel room look beautiful on camera, or capture the energy of a destination in a 30-second video, that is a skill brands are paying for right now.

Travel Photography and Videography

If you have a good eye and technical skills, this is one of the most transferable ways to fund travel.

Hotels commission photographers for their marketing. Tourism boards hire videographers for campaigns. Travel publications license images. And destination wedding photography is an entire industry built entirely around this lifestyle.

You don’t need to be Instagram famous. You need a strong portfolio and the ability to deliver professional quality. That’s it.

Travel Writing and Blogging

This one takes longer to build but it compounds. A travel blog done right, with solid SEO and affiliate strategy, generates passive income for years.

Affiliate links for hotels, flights, travel insurance, and gear mean every time someone books through your link, you earn. You’re also creating an asset that grows while you sleep.

Travel writing also extends beyond your own blog. Magazines, online publications, and travel guides pay per piece. If you’re already traveling, you’re sitting on content.

Inside The Travel Influencer Handbook, I cover how to approach hotels for collaborations and what to say because knowing how to ask is half the battle. Whether you’re pitching for a free stay, a paid campaign, or a content trade, the framework matters.

Online Businesses You Can Run While Traveling Full-Time

Coaching and Consulting

Now here’s the part most “get paid to travel” videos skip entirely. And honestly, this is the model that gave me the most freedom.

Whatever you’re already good at, whether it’s marketing, fitness, nutrition, finance, career transitions, business strategy, or social media, you can coach people on it online.

Video calls work in Bali exactly the same way they work in your hometown. Your expertise travels with you. Your overhead is essentially zero. And your income is uncapped.

I’ve worked with people who had never made a single piece of travel content, built a coaching practice in their area of expertise, and used that income to fund a life they designed entirely on their own terms.

Freelancing and Remote Services

Copywriting, social media management, web design, graphic design, video editing, and virtual assistance are all skills companies need, and they don’t care where you’re sitting when you deliver them.

This is one of the fastest paths from employed to location-free, especially if you already have the skill set.

I’ve seen students go from full-time employee to two or three freelance clients, with the same income and full location freedom, without posting a single piece of travel content.

Digital Products and Courses

Package what you know into something that sells while you sleep. A course, a guide, a workshop, or a membership.

You build it once. It earns indefinitely. This is the model that let me stop trading time for money and start building income that worked whether I was at my laptop or on a surfboard.

The travel piece becomes your backdrop. Your lifestyle. The thing that makes your brand magnetic. But it’s not the product. You are.

The Real Secret to Becoming a Digital Nomad

When I was in corporate finance (you can read my full ‘origin’ story here) I didn’t fit neatly into any of these categories. I wasn’t a travel blogger. I wasn’t a photographer. I just knew I wanted to travel, I wanted income that didn’t require me to be in one place, and I was willing to figure it out.

So I sat down and wrote a list of every single thing I could do. Not what made sense, not what was realistic, every option that existed for me if I was willing to move. And then I picked one and started.

That’s really the whole secret. Not a perfect plan. A direction and a decision to begin.

The Travel Influencer Handbook

Now if the travel industry path is calling you, and you want a step-by-step guide to building your personal brand, creating content that attracts hotels and travel brands, and landing your first paid collaboration, I have something for you.

The Travel Influencer Handbook is everything I know about this space, packaged into one resource. It covers building your brand from scratch, creating content that gets you noticed, and the exact framework for working with hotels and travel brands, whether you’re pitching cold or responding to inbound.

If you’ve been thinking about this for a while, this is the resource that makes the path clear.

In this day and age, the travel lifestyle is more accessible than you think. It does not require a million followers. It does not require you to reinvent yourself. It requires income that isn’t location-dependent, and there are more ways to build that than most people realize.

You just need to pick a path and start moving.
