How to Find Affordable Flights for Summer 2026

If you’re traveling this summer, you’re probably going to see higher airfares. Summer brings warm weather and is always among the busiest – hence the most expensive – times. But even so, it’s possible to find some good deals with smart booking. Flight pricing has become more dynamic, with airlines adjusting fares based on demand, route popularity, and travel dates.

Book at the right time

Timing is one of the big factors in pricing. Several travel studies suggest that waiting until the last minute is usually an expensive mistake. For summer travel, some experts recommend booking domestic flights 1-3 months before departure (and 3-5 months ahead for international flights). This will normally give you access to lower fare classes before demand pushes prices higher.

Expedia’s 2026 Air Hacks report advising booking “closer than you think”, but not at the last minute. It notes that domestic economy travelers are likely to find better prices when booking 15 to 30 days before departure; international travelers may see savings when booking 31 to 45 days ahead.

Use fare alerts and price tracking

One of the easy ways to spot a deal is by setting up fare alerts (on Google Flights, Expedia, or whichever app you’re using). You can get notifications to see when prices rise or fall on your preferred routes.

Google Flights shows historical pricing insights so you can check whether current fares are relatively high or low. The alerts allow you to more easily book when prices drop (rather than having to manually search every day).

Be flexible with dates

A small adjustment to your travel schedule can lead to savings. Peak summer weekends are usually more expensive than midweek departures.

Airfare research shows that Friday flights can sometimes offer better value than Sunday departures; Tuesday remains one of the quieter days for airport travel. So if you can shift your departure or return date by just one or two days you may be able to uncover lower fares.

Late summer can be less expensive than early summer. Some 2026 travel data shows that flights after mid-August tend to be cheaper than those during June and July, when demand is highest.

If you’re currently travelling and can’t access the prices you’d find back home, you can check ExpressVPN’s official website to find a server in your country.

Compare nearby airports

Many people focus on the closest airport. It’s often worth checking nearby departure and arrival airports to see if there are any lower fares.

For example, flying into a secondary airport and taking a train, shuttle, or short connecting flight to your final destination may reduce overall travel costs. This is particularly useful for the big tourist destinations where airport competition affects pricing.

Most flight search engines include an option to search multiple airports at once, making comparisons easy enough.

Use flexible destination searches

If your travel dates are fixed but your destination is flexible, consider using Google Flights or a similar platform to browse fares across multiple destinations.

This can help you find destinations with unusually low fares during your travel window. Rather than choosing a destination first and searching for flights second, reversing the process sometimes leads to better value.

Watch for extra fees

A low advertised fare doesn’t always mean a cheap trip overall. Many budget airlines charge additional fees for checked bags, seat selection, priority boarding, and other services.

Before booking, compare the total trip cost rather than the base fare alone. A slightly higher ticket price from a full-service airline may end up being less expensive once baggage and seating costs are included.
